Jeff Young lives in Vale, N.C. - an area known as the Catawba Valley Pottery region. He produces wood fired folk pottery. His traditional line of pottery uses hand dug clay, ash glazes and are fired in his wood kiln. His alkaline glaze is a combination of wood ash, glass, and clay. It is a more intense and time consuming process but produces a truly unique and authentic folk style of pottery.
Some of Jeff's work is displayed in the Pottery Album.
Wood-Fired Devil Monkey Jug
This is a wood-fired Monkey Jug with an ash and clay glaze. This was the first Monkey Jug that Jeff produced and actually strikes as a resemblence to the creator. This is a "keeper" that resides in the Young household.
A Monkey Jug is actually a two-chambered vessel thus the two or more spouts. One chamber sets on top of the other and is permantly affixed. The spouts oppose each other such that no liquid will spill from the other if used to pour or drink from.
Jeff concentrates his greatest efforts on Monkey Jugs.
